The title refers to Hugh, Earl Percy (born 1742) son of Sir Hugh and Lady Elizabeth Smithson. Sir Hugh was created Duke of Northumberland in1766. James Smithson, Sir Hugh's son was to become founder of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington.
