As World War II claimed the lives of millions, the noted modernist interior designer launched a crusade against the real threat to the civilized world: Elsie de Wolfe, Syrie Maugham, and their obsession with antique furniture. With great wit, Robsjohn-Gibbings questions the centuries-old notion that antiques are more desirable than newly designed furniture, skewering Chippendale, Hepplewhite, Sheraton, and etc. He goes so far as to declare Harry K. Thaw a hero for murdering Stanford White, because it prematurely terminated the career of this celebrated Beaux Arts architect. Hilarious but also informative.

Palm Beach was the last big production number of the Gilded Age.
